Today there is no need to explain why life in the modern world is becoming more and more dangerous, and Ukraine, unfortunately, did not become an exception in this sad trend. As a matter of fact, injuries, burns, fractures, electric shock – all cases of trauma – are not always the course of terrorism, fires or natural disasters. Any injury can happen in any "safe" place. Sadly, thousands of people pass away every single day all over the world because of the absence of well-timed help. Therefore, our aim is to help and teach children throughout the country what to do in case of medical emergency and how to provide basic first aid. We intend to bring the project to a permanent systematic level in all educational institutions of Ukraine.
The immediate project goals are:
● to save children's lives and to teach them systemic help;
● to create an educational system for acquiring practical skills of first pre-medical care for children and teachers at schools;
● to incorporate “First Pre-medical Care” course into the school courses "Protection and safety of life" and "Protection of the fatherland", which will be taught by already trained teachers of the same schools;
● to provide schools with all the necessary medical equipment for teaching the previously mentioned courses;
● to train millions of children at schools how to provide emergency medical assistance within the scope of the courses "Protection and safety of life" and "Protection of the fatherland";
● to design and develop a mobile app for distance learning.
Our long-term target is to promote the life-saving culture and the importance of saving people in Ukraine, caring for your own health and those around you. We expect our project to become national, and this will allow us to expand our sphere of influence into other areas (assistance to people with disabilities, old people, orphans, etc.).
Children at schools will be taught first aid courses in the grades 9-11 as a part of the project "Defending the Fatherland" and in the grades 1-8 as a part of the subject "Fundamentals of Health". Two or three teachers from every school will take the course and become first-aid instructors. A state certificate will be issued in terms of these courses, and will be considered as teacher's upgrade. We are planning to implement such certification at all schools of Ukraine, so that someone from the pedagogical staff at every school will be able to train other teachers and purchase the needed equipment for the course in the future. We want to motivate teachers and students to provide first aid and to develop the life-saving culture making it popular and vitally important.
Project “Helper” is already supported by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine; Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine; Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine; Ministry of Culture of Ukraine; Ministry of Information Policy of Ukraine. We started to conduct our first lessons at Kyiv schools. Our partners include the Red Cross of Ukraine, the Kyiv City Malta Assistance Office, Motohelp and many other community and charitable organizations and initiatives.
In 2017 - 2018, we implemented a pilot project “Helper” in the Lyceum at NTUU “KPI named after Igor Sikorsky" and several schools in Kyiv. The results were startling! By the end of the project more than 1400 children have been trained how to provide emergency medical care and how to use the necessary equipment.
On September 16, 2019, on the occasion of World First Aid Day, a roundtable was held to gather representatives of the professional education community, training centers and community organizations involved in the promotion and training of first aid. The possibilities of introducing systematic training for teachers and students help were discussed there.
According to statistics, 61.2% of children in Ukraine are submitted to at least one type of physical or psychological violence. 40% of parents beat their kids at least occasionally. 10% of parents beat their children often and / or fiercely. 50% of kids suffer from bullying at schools from the side of their mates. It was established that parents who were beaten in their childhood keep beating their own kids and beloved twice more often than those who were not subjected to violence. Despite the existing Law on Childhood Protection, the level of physical violence is not decreasing, and the one of psychological violence is only growing.
We also observe bullying among children at schools. This phenomenon is the result of violence in the family, because kids are their parents’ mirrors. They adopt their moms’ and dads’ behaviour and transpose it into the social groups other than their family, such as schoolmates, friends, clubmates etc. And the horrible thing is that this long chain becomes endless, because when the children grown up, they are going to act just like their parents in their childhood. Therefore, we believe that our society needs to be changed because violent approach to raising children only habituates them to the right of force but not the force of right.
The project began with the flash mob #НеБийДитину on Facebook in September 2016, thanks to volunteer moms joined by caring citizens, parents and psychologists. During this time, brief information materials were created: infographics, booklets, which are available for free online. La Strada - Ukraine has granted permission to publish a hotline for children and about children. The first 1000 booklets were printed thanks to the participants of the flashmob, and the first edition of 4,500 booklets was supported by the Foundation Vidrodzhennya. The project has participated in the «Докудейз»-2017, International Human Rights Film Festival, the Bad Mama Family Festival, at various events and booklet presentations in Kyiv.
We have set several goals within our project:
● increasing the level of mutual respect among children and adults;
● formation of the new generation where our children will apply new methods of communication and nourishment towards their own kids;
● decreasing the level of violence and aggression in Ukraine;
● reducing the crime rate.
As a result, we will have a fundamentally new society in which people know how to negotiate, cooperate, respect the law and each other. In the new world, a child won’t be hurt by anybody - neither an adult nor by another child, neither physically nor emotionally or sexually. This is our long-term perspective.
The beneficiaries will be broadly involved in implementing our project. Families will take part in various festivals, charity maraphones, sport games, quests, master classes and flash mobs organized in terms of the project. Parents will have an opportunity and be encouraged to have a consultation with professional psychologists online and watch educational podcasts on the YouTube channel. Everyone will be able to call our hotline and inform about some cases of violence. Learning courses for parents and support groups will be created for the families. Lectures on anti-bullying will be conducted at schools for pupils and teachers.
In 2019 we conducted several festivals and flash mobs where people familiarized themselves with our project “Against violence” and shared their opinion and ideas about it. We also asked kids about their attitude towards violence and the situation in their families and at schools. We invited child psychologists to be present at these events. They consulted parents and played various games with the kids. Every next festival brings more and more volunteers who support and wish to join us!
